The Historic Miller House

The Historic Miller House in Columbus, Indiana, is a 1957 residential masterpiece designed by Eero Saarinen — one of the 20th century's most celebrated architects — for industrialist Irwin Miller and his wife Xenie. The house is considered a landmark of mid-century modernism: its open plan living spaces, floor-to-ceiling glass, and seamless indoor-outdoor integration were groundbreaking for American domestic architecture.

The interior was designed by Alexander Girard, with a landscape by Dan Kiley. The Miller family used it as a private residence until 2011, when they donated it to the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

The house is remarkable not only for its architecture but for its extraordinary original furnishings — including custom-designed furniture, a Saarinen Womb Chair, and a celebrated sunken conversation pit.
