Maluti Rock Formation Park

The Maluti Rock Formation Park encompasses a 6,500-hectare landscape of extraordinary sandstone formations in the Maluti Mountains straddling the border of Lesotho and the Eastern Cape of South Africa. The formations — a maze of sculpted orange-and-ochre cliffs, overhangs, and boulder fields — were shaped by 250 million years of wind and water erosion.

The area is also one of the richest repositories of San (Bushman) rock art on the African continent, with over 400 individual painted panels recorded across the park, some dating back 4,000 years. The park was established in 1994, partly as a post-apartheid initiative to recognise and protect the cultural heritage of the San people.

Guided tours led by San cultural heritage specialists are the primary visitor experience.
